4 primary sources of songs 1865-1897
1 ) "After the Ball", it is a song from the 1870s using a new style of singing. that is singing a verse then the chorus using 4/4 narrative time for the verses. the chorus uses a swaying waltz rhythm. It shows how songs were advancing and becoming more structuralized.
2) "The Temperance Crusader; or, Mother's Out Praying" is a song that reflected the hard lifestyle of the late 1800s. Its about a poor boy, just wanting some food because he is very hungry. It shows how children are worked too much but they get no money in return.
3) "Put Me in My Little Bed," Is a song by Steven Foster that really established him as a well known songwriter. This is important because in this time period, people started caring more about education and learning ability. So deeper song writing was becoming more common than just having a good song.
4)"swell" Is a song that contradicts what the last song was about. In this time period there were many rich and corrupt business owners. This song is about one of them. It is a very happy song and talks about the joy of fancy living. Its crazy how in this time period there are popular songs about little kids starving the death and men who are rich and happy, and how they are both very relevant to whats going on. It really shows the divide.
